Marlborough Sounds Pelorus Mail Boat - welcome on board the Pelorus Express

Friday - Outer Sounds

Depart Havelock Marina at 9.30am.

Steam to the Outer Sounds to our first stop at Pohuenui  Island  Resort, once the site of a large sheep station running 12,000 sheep.  Now this is owned by a German family who visit several times a year.  This operation has been scaled down and is now run by a New Zealand couple.  Accomodation is provided.  Here you may stay for the week and we will pick you up next time we call.

On then to Tui Nature Reserve.  This is on a peninsula with cabins available for hire perched high up on the hillside.  Beautiful views abound.  Once again you many take the Mail Boat in and out.

Next stop includes the welcome by two kune kune pigs which have become used to us feeding them on the wharf.  Here is your chance to pat a real pig!

Later on this trip we pass a Salmon Farm.  Here seals often play around the pens.  Hoping for a free feed no doubt!

We will also visit the King Shag colony.   This is a very rare bird and the only shag with pink feet!

Last stop today is at Te Puru where the great grandson of the Brownlie family still lives.  This family is legendary in the early years of Havelock and the sawmilling industry.

Return to Havelock approx. 5.00pm.
