Marlborough Sounds Pelorus Mail Boat - welcome on board the Pelorus Express

Tuesday - Western route

Leave Havelock morning at 9.30am cruise out to Paradise Point our first stop then on to Paradise Bay the site of a Butter Factory in the 1930’s.  Learn about the dairy industry in these isolated areas and discover why the mail run was called the “Cream Run”.

On then to Nydia Bay, the site of a once great sawmilling area and the great wooden rail line  which went over the ridge in the distance. 

From there into North West Bay  once a great farming basin.  Later we deliver to the last remaining farm in the Pelorus  in Wilson Bay. This has been in the same family for five generations.

We then stop over at Te Rawa Lodge for a few minutes.  Go ashore here and buy a cold beer or an ice cream or just sit on the deck and enjoy the view.

Next stop is Maude Island.  This is a Wildlife Reserve run by the Department of Conservation and dedicated to breeding endangered birds, namely the Takahe.

At a later stop you will see tame Weka come down the jetty with the land owner.

Return to Havelock approx. 4.30pm
