Marlborough Sounds Pelorus Mail Boat - on board the Pelorus Express
Tuesday - Western route
Depart Havelock Marina at 9:30am. We cruise out for 30 minutes to our first mail stop at Paradise Point and then on to Paradise Bay, the site of the Butter Factory operating at its peak in the 1930s. The dairy industry was very important during this time and we’ll tell you all about it and why the mail run was called the "Cream Run".
One of our next stops is Nydia Bay, the site of a once great sawmilling area and the great wooden rail line that went over the ridge that we can see as we stop.
As we continue on, we visit North West Bay, once a great farming basin and we also deliver the mail and supplies to the last remaining commercial farm in Pelorus Sound, located in Wilson Bay. The farm has been in the same family for 5 generations.
Later we stop at Te Rawa Lodge ), one of the unique and beautiful Lodges that offer accommodation in the Sound. We can go ashore here and enjoy a cold beer or ice cream, and take a few moments to relax and enjoy the view.
Next stop is Maud Island, a wildlife reserve run by the Department of Conservation. It is dedicated to breeding endangered birds including the Takahe. Seals also enjoy spending time on the Island and we often see them basking on the rocks.
If time permits there is an opportunity for a swim or nature walk later in the trip but as you will see when you come on the trip with us, the residents rely on the timely delivery of their mail!
Return to Havelock at approx. 4:30pm.
